New England PG Getting Division
I Looks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brian Towey
TJ Sorrentine enrolled at Vermont as a relatively
unheralded prospect out of Rhode Island. After two years in the America East
Conference and Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year accolades, Sorrentine
is anonymous no more.
TJ's younger brother, James Sorrentine, is just starting to get some Division I
looks, however. The 5'11'' 160 pound junior point guard from St. Raphael Academy
in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, is averaging 18.7 points, 5.0 assists, and 2.0
steals per game, while shooting 41% from the field, 40% from three, and 77% from
the line.
According to Sorrentine's father and high school coach, Tom, James' biggest
strength is his vision.
"He sees the floor well," said Tom Sorrentine. "That's probably his biggest
strength. And he can shoot the three."
Some programs in New England are taking a look at this member of the class of
2004, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Holy Cross among them.
Sorrentine plays on the AAU circuit with the Rhode Island Breakers,
along with his backcourt mate from St. Raphael, Jeff Xavier, who has also
received Division I attention.
Sorrentine carries a 3.2 GPA in the classroom.
